Attention Parents:

Last fall, the Iowa Department of Education, along with a team of facilitators, began a process for examining science standards for Iowa. The Science Standards Review Team, made up of science educators and professionals, convened to carry out this work. After viewing, studying, and discussing numerous sets of state science standards from across the nation, the team voted to gather public feedback on the Next Generation Science Standards. These are a set of learning expectations in science for students in kindergarten through high school. The Next Generation Science Standards were developed by 26 states, including Iowa. All states can consider adopting and adapting them to meet their needs.

The Department has announced a series of February public forums and a statewide survey<>in response to the review team's recommendation. They are designed to obtain the opinions and comments of educators, students, businesses, parents, and other stakeholders regarding the Next Generation Science Standards. Responses will be used to provide guidance to the Science Standards Review Team, which is expected to submit a final recommendation regarding science standards to the State Board of Education later this year.

Attention Parents:

Our school is now operating under the minimum of 1080 hours of instruction. This is a minimum, and many schools have chosen to exceed that minimum to increase student instructional time. MStM is one of those schools that has opted to maintain 180 days while exceeding the 1080 hours minimum.

Since we are adhering to the hours requirement, we are not forced by the state to make up all of our time missed unless we drop below that minimum of 1080 hours. Our district has decided to manage this by making up any full days that we miss due to weather or any other unforeseen circumstances.

This means that we will be making up the January 7 cancellation at the end of the school year, making the last day of school May 22. The time that we missed on January 5 and January 13 will not be made up. This allows us to remain above the 1080 hours for the school year.

Should additional days be missed, early dismissals, or late starts occur, this will be revisited.
